What works (and what fails) in our humid Gulf Coast environment. A tile guide from a local contractor.
The Houston / Woodlands area has high humidity year-round. Bathrooms see particular moisture stress. The wrong tile choice β or the right tile installed wrong β leads to mold, grout failure, and water damage that's expensive to fix.
Why it wins: Lowest water absorption (under 0.5%), most durable, easiest to maintain. Doesn't fade. Available in every style β subway, large-format, marble-look, wood-look.
Cost: $3-$15/sqft material. $8-$15/sqft labor.
Best for: floors, shower walls, tub surrounds.
Watch out for: some lower-end porcelain has matte finishes that show water spots more than glossy.
Why it works: Inexpensive, looks good, easy to install. Higher water absorption than porcelain (3-7%) but fine for properly waterproofed walls.
Cost: $2-$5/sqft material.
Best for: shower walls, backsplashes, accent walls.
Avoid for: floors (use porcelain instead).
Why it's beautiful: Marble, travertine, slate β unique character, premium feel.
Cost: $10-$40+/sqft material.
Watch out for: requires sealing every 2-3 years. Marble shows water spots, especially in showers. Travertine has natural pits that need filling.
Best for: floors (with proper sealing), accent walls, niches.
